About Narew National Park

Narew National Park, established in 1996, protects one of the last and most important natural river valley ecosystems in Poland, centered on the Narew River. Often called the "Polish Amazonia," the park features a rare braided river system with numerous channels, sand islands, swamps, peat bogs, marshes, and forested areas. Stretching over approximately 73 square kilometers, it provides vital habitats for over 250 bird species, including large colonies of migratory waterfowl and raptors. The park's landscape is flat and gently rolling, a classic example of a lowland river valley shaped by periodic flooding that supports a mosaic of wetlands and forested patches, nourishing an exceptionally rich biodiversity. Historically, the region has been shaped by centuries of traditional agriculture and fishing, with local communities utilizing the river's natural resources with respect for ecological balance. Recreational activities mainly include canoeing through the labyrinth of river arms, fishing, hiking on carefully marked trails, and birdwatching from designated observation platforms. The park's peaceful, untouched environment also attracts photographers and nature lovers seeking solitude. Notable features include the meandering Narew River itself, the swamplands rich in rare plants like orchids and carnivorous species, and the diverse population of animals such as otters, beavers, elk, and lizards. Bird enthusiasts particularly value the park for spotting species like the white-tailed eagle, black stork, and the elusive aquatic warbler. Visitors appreciate the park for its accessibility from nearby towns and the well-maintained infrastructure including visitor centers and educational paths. Overall, Narew National Park is a precious sanctuary for wetland conservation and a peaceful retreat for outdoor recreation in Eastern Europe.
